His deep-seated hatred for Kouga is undeniable and steeped in terrible mystery, along with his ninja technique of immortality. While the main members of the Kouga clan were much more open to the peace and joining of the clans, Tenzan is quick to take the offensive in the war and start the killing right away. The Iga are led by the sadistic, absolute bastard Tenzan. Gennosuke's and Oboro's pending engagement, which was intended to be the hope for the future of the clans, is shattered. Unfortunately for the young lovers, their respective clans can't stand the sight of each other and they much prefer the idea of killing the other side off in order to reach supremacy. Oboro is a kind, gentle, caring, and compassionate young woman and is deeply in love with the noble and strong Gennosuke, who also loves her. Gennosuke is the heir of the Kouga clan, and Oboro the Iga. The story centers around two star-crossed lovers (the parallels with Romeo and Juliet in the story continue and are undeniable) with Gennosuke and Oboro. The war will determine the next heir of the Tokugawa Shogunate. However, the cease-fire is promptly lifted by Ieyasu Tokugawa, deciding that each clan shall submit ten of their most skilled ninja to battle. Despite the tension and constant hatred, the clans have been operating under a cease-fire ordered by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Both clans have had a long-standing hatred for many years, like something out of the Montague/Capulet feud in The Bard's Romeo and Juliet. Basilisk is faithful to the original story, in which there are two warring factions - the Kouga Clan and the Iga Clan. The Kouga Ninja Scrolls itself was the inspiration for later anime works such as the milestone anime movie, Ninja Scroll, which features some very similar characters, names, events, and themes as this series.

Funimation ultimately brought the 24 episode series to the US, and now it's collected in it's entirety in this six DVD boxset, Basilisk: The Complete Series. 2005 also saw the release of the original story's adaptation into the live action movie, Shinobi.
